"Do you know when you'll be interviewing Haim?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their extra sister."

However, there remains one problem: The sender also longs to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are not alone. A host of high-profile fans have publicly begged for the position.

It's clear something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a close trio. Their videos frequently depict them marching in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage young girls to start a band."

"So everyone are welcome to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Nod

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the accolade resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The lyrics detail departures and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed confidence required a different sonic direction – more unpolished and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The band's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Legacy

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an worldwide following.

But Haim will always be their number one commitment.

"We have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
