European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
